Inicijativa preispituje dokumentarne konvencije, strategije i ograničenja u savremenoj fotografiji, kao i žanrovske i stilske složenosti u njenoj interpretaciji i značenju.

who are we

The Photodocuments initiative was launched in 2010, with the idea of affirming contemporary photography practices and opening up a broader discursive space for exploration of photography as a complex social phenomenon and a medium of artistic expression. One of the goals of the initiative is encouragement of the professional public to engage in a continual and comprehensive critical, problematic and phenomenological research and evaluation of the local contemporary photographic production. Also, the Photodocuments initiative focuses on considering the concept of documentary in photography, reflected within the circumstances of the photographic image today. The initiative reconsiders documentary conventions, strategies and limitations in contemporary photography, as well as genre and stylistic complexities in its interpretation and meaning.

Since 2010, within the Photodocuments platform, a series of exhibitions have been organized (Photodocuments 2010, Аrt Gallery Požega, 2010; Photodocuments 02, Salon of the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade – MoCAB, Remont Gallery, Street Gallery, 2012; Collective Practices and Photography in the Region, Artget Gallery, Belgrade Cultural Centre, 2017), public talks and other programmes have been held, and several professional publications published (Proceeding of Professional Meeting Photodocuments 2011; Proceeding Photodocuments 02, 2012; Photodocuments Portfolio, 2016; Collective Practices and Photography, 2019).

Within the project’s activities, a number of issues and topics were raised as regards photographic education, collection and preservation of photographic heritage, then, current phenomena, tendencies and trends in photographic practices, strategies and causes of the appearance of non-institutional collectives and associated activities in the field of photography, and finally the position and relevance of the local photographic scene and its protagonists within international frameworks. At the same time, elaborate partnerships with similar initiatives were established and developed in the region and internationally, among others with: the Sector Institute (Ljubljana), Photon Gallery (Ljubljana), the Celje Focus Festival (Slovenia), Office for Photography (Zagreb), the Macedonian Centre for Photography (Skopje), the FotoDoks Festival (Munich), the Čkrap Collective (Tetovo), as well as many professional individuals in the region and in Europe.
